Lessons From My Horse Roxy

The sun was setting behind the red mountains as a moving truck pulled up to a ranch on the outskirts of Hurricane, Utah. A young boy named Ethan stepped out of the truck, took a deep breath of the dry air, and looked around at the vast open space that surrounded him. He had just moved to this small town with his family and didn’t know anyone.
Ethan was shy and had a hard time making friends. But he was fascinated by horses, and he had always wanted to learn how to ride. His parents had promised him that they would find a stable where he could take riding lessons. The next day, they drove to the nearest stable, which was run by a woman named Ms. Petersen. She welcomed them and showed them around.
As they walked through the stables, Ethan’s eyes locked onto a beautiful chestnut horse with a white blaze on her forehead. She was in the far corner of the stable, but her eyes met Ethan’s, and he felt a connection. “That’s Roxy,” Ms. Petersen said, “she’s one of our best horses, but she’s a bit stubborn. Only a few people can handle her.”
Ethan’s heart skipped a beat, and he knew that he wanted to ride Roxy more than anything. Ms. Petersen gave him a brief introduction to horse riding, and Ethan started taking lessons twice a week. He was a bit nervous at first, but Roxy quickly became his favorite horse. Even though she was stubborn, Ethan felt that they had a special bond. They would communicate in a way that only they understood.
As the weeks went by, Ethan’s riding skills improved, and he started spending more time with Roxy. He would brush her coat, feed her treats, and talk to her. Roxy seemed to understand everything he said, and she would nudge him with her nose or whinny when he talked to her. Ethan started feeling less homesick and more comfortable in his new surroundings.
One day, Ms. Petersen suggested that Ethan participate in a local horse riding competition. Ethan was hesitant at first, but he agreed. The competition was only a few weeks away, and Ms. Petersen trained him and Roxy every day.
On the day of the competition, Ethan was nervous. He had never competed before, and he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of the other riders. But as he mounted Roxy and felt her strong muscles beneath him, he felt a sense of calm. He and Roxy were in this together.
The competition was fierce, and the other riders were all older and more experienced. But Ethan and Roxy gave it their all. They completed the course without any mistakes, and Roxy’s speed and agility amazed everyone. When the judges announced the winner, Ethan couldn’t believe his ears. He had won!
Ethan was overjoyed, and he hugged Roxy tightly. He had never felt so happy and proud. As he looked around, he saw that many of the other riders were now congratulating him and Roxy. He had made friends, and he knew that Hurricane was starting to feel like home.
From that day on, Ethan and Roxy continued to compete in local horse riding competitions, and they never lost their special bond. Ethan had found a true friend in Roxy, and he knew that wherever life took him, Roxy would always be by his side.
