I am writing about my great-great grandma Masho Agopian. She was born February tenth, 1891 in Armenia. She had an arranged marriage meaning her parents told her who she had to marry and when. She was crying before her wedding because she had to marry an old man who she’d never met before, her husband Haruton was 11 years older than her. Later, she had 9 children 6 of them when she lived in Armenia and 3 children after she came to live in california. Four of her children died when they were babies. Rose was their first child born in america. When they came to America Haruton was a trash man. They were very poor. Each of their children only had two outfits, one for school and one to play in and they only had an outdoor stove. They came to America in the 1920’s because Turkish people were killing Armenians. So Masho left the country. When she was leaving she got separated from her husband. They were separated for a whole eight years. When Masho and her two kids were at the red cross station a turkish soldier came up to kill the armenian group but whenever he aimed for them the red cross workers stood in front of the armenians to protect them. The soldier kept moving and aiming for them but the workers kept standing in front of the Armenians to protect them so the soldier got tired of it and rode off on his horse. Some of the refugees moved on but Masho and her children wanted to rest longer. It was a good thing they did because Haruton ended up stopping at that same red cross station and they were finally reunited. Unfortunately, my grandma Suzanne never got to meet her grandma, Masho because Masho died before my grandma was born. My great-aunt Laura was the only one out of all my grandma’s siblings that got to meet my Armenian great- Grandparents and she remembered when she went to see them even though she was only four when her grandma, Masho died. My great- grandma Said that she was a sweet and soft spoken person. So in conclusion, my great-great grandma was a nice person who overcame people who were trying to hurt her and stuck with her family the whole time.
